At CES this year Gizmodo brought a device called TV-B-Gone which is a one-button turn off for all the TVs around you. Very clever idea! CES is full of these TVs which all look the same and there no innovation except for the occasional new format that no one cares about (2 by 4K what?). Gizmodo decided to turn off some TVs as a prank, they even hired a new guy to do it so no one would really get in trouble.
In my opinion the joke was really funny the only part that wasn’t was when they turned off the TV of the guy giving a presentation. Besides that it was innocent fun. A little corperation-bull and some bull being thrown back in their face.
What am I getting at? Don’t hate Gizmodo for the joke: hate them for the awful blog and lies they report. If you have ever read their blog you know what they are about and inviting them to CES was your own fault. Gizmodo was very cool about it in the sense that they were prepared to take the consequences. That my friend is the only positive thing I can say about Gizmodo.
I will not link to the Gizmodo video showing the prank because I do not want to give Gizmodo that much promotion.
In 2007 we had a lot of release dates being, well, released. Just cause someone says something will be released doesn’t mean it will be and that angers me. Here’s the most disappointments for me!
1. Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness
When the story of Penny Arcade having a game for not only Windows but Mac and Linux hit Digg in 2006 I was excited. Penny Arcade having a game: awesome. Penny Arcade having a game for Mac and Linux? Double-awesome. Then at this years PAX they said the game would be released after for Xbox Live Arcade. The thought then occurred to me that it could be on Wii Ware in 2008 too but that would be later.
The game was said to be released by Christmas 2007, it’s almost 2008 and I have no game on my Mac. Penny Arcade has no comment on their site about a delay either.
How awesome did that Wii Balance Board look when you first saw it at the E3-thingy? I know Nintendo never gave a date for America but Wikipedia said around Christmas, well it’s after and we’ve heard nothing. It’s been out in Japan for a while now and there is no reason why it should take that long to translate a video game, I’m sorry.
3. The Aquabats new cd “Charge!!!”
The Aquabats have been recording a new CD for a while now. It is the sequel to “Charge!!” that will be called “Charge!!!”. Their forums all say “It should be out by the end of the year” we’ll it again is the end of the year and not even a blog post! Where are my heros?! Come in Bat Commander can you hear me?!
I bought my iMac at the Apple Store in Nashville and they said if I ever had any issues AppleCare would cover it and help me out. So I got suckered into buying this “extended warranty.” My screen decided to break so I called Apple and they told me to bring it to the Apple Store and they’d tell me if they could fix it. They also told me that if they could fix it, it could possibly take a week to repair. The problem? The nearest Apple Store is 4 hours away. So I decided to see if they would do it by mail. They said no.
Then I did what would be a big deal to Apple. I decided to ask for a supervisor. Try 1: 50 minute wait, no one ever answered. Try 2: 45 minute wait, no one ever answered. I believe they were not transferring me and they just had put me on hold. Try 3: I got through after a 30 minute wait.
So I got through! The first question from the supervisor was in a coky-ass attitude “Do you really live 4 hours away?” I told her yes. “No you don’t” Yes I do! Then she said “You damaged the screen yourself didn’t you? This stuff doesn’t develop on it’s own.” I assured her I did not, then she went on to say “Well Apple will not replace your iMac [with AppleCare] even if you take it to the store for something your friends did to your monitor” HA! That’s where I had her. In order for my friends to damage it I would have to have friends! I was also told that she could cancel my Apple Care to use the $160 to pay the $1000 dollars Apple wants to replace the screen. This computer’s price is 80% monitor? I don’t think so!
So end of story: Apple Care is a damn lie. Use the first 10 days if you have to buy your product from Apple to tell if anything is wrong. Oh and Apple says your a liar.
I thought I told you, Mr. Future US that if you didn’t cut the crap you’d get a backlash bigger then your arse can take. Well the smart folks at DS Fanboy has did a little ad-comparison of Nintendo’s Nintendo Power (Pre-November) and Future’s Nintendo Power (November to Current) and have seen a giant increase in ads.
What they found is that the overall page count has been reduced by 20, and 10 more pages of ads have been inserted. They even went as far as to compare it to the Ziff Davis-owned gaming magazine which almost 10-pages of ads less then Future US’s Nintendo Power.
If the renewel cost wasn’t the same as buying the Zelda Phantom Hourglass guide I probably would not have renewed to what was my favorite magazine.
I’ve been subscribing to Mac Addict, now Mac|Life, and I’ve been receiving the Official Xbox Magazine through a free magazine deal. These magazines have one thing in common: They’re owned by Future US, a magazine publisher in San Francisco, who used to be awesome until this.
In both Mac|Life and the Official Xbox Magazine there are 30-page ads for AT&T. Let me remind you: We pay for this! With money! What type of industry would do this? I did a little run down on Mac|Life. Only 24 pages in the 130 page magazine did not contain advertisements.

Say Digg started charging 25$ for a year of Digg-content or 10$ for one month, like a magazine, and to find that 82% of Digg was ads. You’d say forget that, I’d join Reddit for free.
Nintendo Power has recently been bought out by Future US. This would make me cry if this is what they are going to do to what was one of the best magazines out there.
I’ve signed up for three different game rental services in the past week. Only one would send me any games. That was Gamefly. Gamefly sent out games but it took on average a week or more for the game to get to my mailbox. Why? Who cares, you pay month and that means you better be playing that game for a long time or you’re spending most of your month without a game!
GottaPlay looked like it would be better, but sadly they only own 1 copy of every game and after 5 days they wouldn’t even ship me one game. There goes that 10-day free trial!
GamezNFlix also looked good but once I signed up I could only pick from a limited selection because I was “doing a trial” and they preloaded my Queue with a every version of FIFA 08 for PS2, Wii, and Xbox. Whats even worse? When I searched for a game it would ask me if I wanted to log out. With further browsing I found out their site does not work in Safari or Firefox. Forget that!
If you have a game rental service you think I should check out please post it in the comments, otherwise I don’t think we can give these companies enough hell for being awful.
So you just brought home that giant LCD or Plasma TV right? Think everything will look gorgeous? Think again. Unless all your doing is watching upscaled DVDs, high-definition DVDs, or high definition games you will most certainly be wrong.
Not all TV stations broadcast in HD and that means those stations will look worse then before.
That being said, I love my new TV… now if only there was something on this damned thing to watch besides an unscaled DVD of Lord of the Rings…
Steve Jobs wrote on the Apple Hot News feed today that the iPhone and iPod touch will get a developer kit in February 2008. This doesn’t say there will be 3rd party apps then, but you can start writing them. Hold it! Wait a second…
“You don’t want your phone to be an open platform,” meaning that anyone can write applications for it and potentially gum up the provider’s network, says Jobs. “You need it to work when you need it to work. Cingular doesn’t want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up.“
– Steve Jobs (January 2007)
So we had to wait 13 months for AT&T to improve their West Coast network to reach the status of the East Coast! (We will not even get into the fact Palm, Nokia, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile has all allowed third party apps from day one!)
Now why would we have to wait from iPhone launch to February? Almost a year to make third party applications! Well Apple said back in April in an official statement…
However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS(R) X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned.
Ah, okay so the 20 or so people who work at Apple had to put Leopard on hold to work on the iPhone! Okay so iPhone delayed Leopard and once the iPhone came out they went back to work on Leopard. Great so now the iPhone won’t receive any updates until Leopard is up and then they will work on the iPhone developer-kit until February and then they will start releasing patches for all the bugs and security issues Leopard may have.
Wow, Apple may need to grab some more employees!
I can no longer praise Apple for their good work because in the year 2007 they have done nothing right. They have done nothing but wreck the Apple expirence this year with the iPhone, AppleTV, Boot Camp, Airport Extreme, Leopard, 802.11n in their Macs, iPod nanos, the iPod colors, and Ringtones…
