I’ve been a computer geek forever now but I have never built a computer. I probably would have by now if I didn’t switch to Macintosh over a year ago though. I went to NewEgg and purchased my parts: a AMD 64 Athlon 3400+, Gigabyte Micro-ATX Motherboard, and a stick of 512MB of RAM. I was hoping the heatsink and thermal compound came with it, but it didn’t. I ordered a heatsink with rush delivery! I also didn’t consider the power supply, being almost six years old, needed to be upgraded. For that I ran down to my local computer shop! Paid the high price, but I got it that day. Now my problem is that RAM runs in pairs and I only bought one stick of RAM. The second piece comes in tomorrow. I cannot wait! Right now I can’t get Windows or Linux to boot without error, I’ll let you know once I get my RAM issue straightened out.
Update: I got another stick of the same RAM and the computer works great! I’m running Windows Vista 64bit and Ubuntu Linux 64bit and I’m thinking of putting Ubuntu 32bit so I can run some 32bit applications that will not seem to run.
